Largest tuna processor and exporter in the Maldives commits to protection of marine environment

Ensis Fisheries, the largest tuna processor and exporter in the Maldives, has earned certification for sustainable seafood production by Friend of the Sea. FOS is the leading global certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment. With this certification, Ensis products can display the Friend of the Sea eco-label.

“We are very pleased to welcome Ensis Fisheries to our family of companies,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “Their traditional approach to fishing aligns well with the modern mission of sustainability.”

Ensis embraces the pole and line method of fishing, which is part of the culture and tradition of every Maldivian fisherman. In this way, the company has been eco-friendly since its founding in 2002. “It is an ethical responsibility for us, to not only protect the legacy of our forefathers who perfected the art of handline, one-by-one fishing, but also to raise awareness and stand against overfishing and the dangers of unsustainable approaches that affect our very livelihood,” explained Hussain Afeef, General Manager of Ensis.

The company processes and exports fresh and frozen Skipjack and Yellowfin tuna to worldwide markets. Ensis has over 50% of the Maldives’ export market share to the EU, with worldwide retail customers that include large international supermarket chains and restaurants. Ensis operates out of the city of Hulhumale, next to the seaport and airport where its processing plant and canning factory are located.
