Astronomy, nature and sustainability took centre stage in a programme for adults and children, culminating on the Night of San Lorenzo with a stargazing evening on the beach of the Calabrian resort.
Turning a holiday into an opportunity to observe nature and learn more about sustainability: with this aim, the World Sustainability Foundation (WSF) held a programme of scientific and environmental outreach from 9 to 11 August at Maritim Resort Calabria in Villapiana, engaging guests in activities focused on astronomy, biodiversity and the discovery of the local environment
The World Sustainability Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2022 by the World Sustainability Organization (WSO). It works to protect ecosystems, natural resources and endangered species, with a particular focus on promoting more responsible and sustainable tourism.
The programme was led by Mario Passoni, Head of Conservation Projects at the World Sustainability Foundation, who guided participants through a series of activities designed to make science engaging and accessible.
Stargazing on the Night of San Lorenzo
The highlight of the programme came on the Night of San Lorenzo, when resort guests gathered on the beach for an evening dedicated to astronomy and stargazing under the summer sky.
Younger guests also took part through Mini Club activities, discovering fascinating facts and record breakers from the animal world, listening to the sounds of nature and exploring science through play and curiosity.
The programme concluded with a session on biology, nature and sustainable tourism, offering an insight into marine and terrestrial ecosystems and Calabria’s natural heritage.
“A holiday can also be an opportunity to learn about sustainability. Taking science communication beyond traditional settings means turning moments of leisure and discovery into opportunities to see the sky, nature and biodiversity around us from a new perspective” commented Mario Passoni.
Tourism, local heritage and sustainability
The initiative reflects Maritim Resort Calabria’s commitment to more environmentally responsible hospitality and to enhancing the value of the local area, through actions ranging from reducing single-use plastics to working closely with local suppliers and partners. The collaboration with the World Sustainability Foundation adds an educational dimension to these efforts, directly engaging guests in discovering the area’s biodiversity and natural heritage.
