In recent decades, the anthropisation of rivers, pollution and illegal fishing have threatened the existence of sturgeon worldwide. Many species of sturgeon are in critical danger of extinction.

In partnership with the Italian Sport Fishing Association (FIPSAS), Friend of the Sea supports a project to recover the Adriatic Sturgeon from extinction.

Over 15,000 micro-chipped sturgeons from the Friend of the Sea-certified caviar company Storione Ticino have been introduced into the main rivers of Northern Italy. Reports of sighting of juveniles born in the wild confirm the success of the project.
