The Estonian company Katroni Ltd. positively concluded its Friend of the Sea audit for perch, pike-perch and Northern pike. The certified products, originating from Peipsi Lake, can now carry the Friend of the Sea sustainability seal of approval.
The fish stocks are considered to be neither overexploited nor overfished. According to the international agreements between Estonia and the Russian Federation the maximum amount of catching is strictly monitored. All fishing activities are registered in the Daily Catching Report. The approved fishery uses gillnets and traps licensed by the Estonian Environmental Inspectorate, with minimal bycatch.
A comprehensive traceability system is in place to guarantee that all Friend of the Sea requirements are fulfilled and that no mixing occurs between certified and not certified origins.
“We are going to proudly display the Friend of the Sea label on our products as evidence of our commitment to the conservation of fish stocks,” claims Mr. Jevgeni Blinnikov of Katroni.
