DESAD, the main Turkish seafood producers association, and FoS sign collaboration agreement to promote sustainable fishing and responsible seafood sourcing in Turkey

Friend of the Sea announces the agreement with DESAD, the Turkish association of seafood processors, for the promotion of sustainable seafood certification and responsible consumption in Turkey.

According to the FAO, total seafood production in Turkey reached 623,192 tonnes. While 25% only is represented by aquaculture, farmed seafood production has grown each year approximately 20% in the past decade.


“The agreement with Friend of the Sea” sais President Niyazi Onen “confirms DESAD’s mission to promote sustainable production as well as companies and consumers environmental awareness.”


Considering the growing global relevance of Turkey in food and seafood production” explains Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea, “we deem the official engagement to sustainable practices of the major seafood companies in the country to be extremely relevant. We believe that Friend of the Sea certification will help motivating also other companies in this direction.”




Friend of the Sea is an international non-profit certification scheme for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Certified products are fished from not overexploited or IUCN Red-listed stocks and with selective methods which do not impact the seabed. Those originate from aquaculture are reared with respect of critical habitat, with no use of anti-foulants, GMOs and growth hormones.

DESAD is the first professional association of authorized representatives in Turkey. It was 
founded in 2005 with the purpose of contributing to the development of the marine products industry. The association promotes the consumption of healthy seafood by increasing public awareness towards sustainable seafood.

The main brands associated to DESAD are:

DARDANEL  which was founded in 1984 by Niyazi Onen. Dardanel is specialized in tuna fish by respecting strict criteria of sustainability.

AYFROST Gıda which is a brand of frozen food specialized in natural and high quality products.

ALFARM ALARKO LEROY which started its activities in 1991 for farming, processing and marketing salmon fish.

HORA Gıda which was established in Istanbul in 1995. Hora proposes healthy and enjoyable diet solutions.

IGLO, a company hold by Igloo Group, which is specialized in frozen foods.


KOCAMAN BALIKÇILIK which has produced big fishing in aquaculture since 1922. This company is engaged in the fish trade for three generations.

SUPER FRESH which is the first company in the retail frozen food industry in Turkey. This brand comprises various products of fruits, vegetables, seafood and pizzas.
