Agroittica Lombarda and its farmed sturgeons (Acipenser transmontanus and Acipenser baerii), sold under the brand Calvisius Caviar (www.calvisius.it), have recently passed their third full Friend of the Sea audit since their initial approval in 2008. Following independent assessment run by an international certification body, the caviar production has proved to be sustainable.
Eighty five percent of sturgeon, one of the oldest families of fishes in existence, valued around the world for their precious roe, are at risk of extinction in the wild, making them the most threatened group of animals on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Sturgeon farming takes pressure off endangered stocks and it can represent a valid alternative for caviar lovers worldwide.
The Italian company Agroittica Lombarda owns the largest sturgeons farm in Europe, more than 60 acres with tanks dedicated to aquaculture where only the finest varieties are bred. Agroittica Lombarda alone manufactures over 20% of the world’s caviar mostly under the brand Calvisius Caviar.
With its innovative aquaculture technique, Agroittica is a symbol of ecological production. The surplus heat from a neighboring steelworks is transferred to the cool resurgent waters in the farm, thus obtaining the perfect habitat for the Siberian Sturgeon and the White Sturgeon of the Pacific.
Agroittica Lombarda Group controls Storione Ticino. This aquaculture company produces Russian Sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) and Adriatic Sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii) which also carries the Friend of the Sea seal of approval.
