FoS Recertifies Acuapesca

Peruvian seafood processorand exporter commits to protecting the marine environment.

Acuapesca Group, one of Peru’s leading seafood processors and exporters, has earned recertification for sustainable seafood production by Friend of the Sea. Friend of the Sea is the preeminent certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment. With this certification, Acuapesca Group can display the Friend of the Sea eco-label on its products. The company has been certified by Friend of the Sea since 2009.

“We are very pleased to again bestow our certification on Acuapesca Group and its family of companies that put a priority on sustainable practices,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “They have a large-scale, complex operation, so the certification was not a simple process. We admire their commitment to the environment.”

The Lima-based Acuapesca Group is dedicated to farming, processing and marketing Peruvian scallops (Argopecten purpuratus) for foreign markets. Over the last 25 years, Acuapesca has been the national and regional leader in the harvest and export of this species. As of this June, the company is also the first farm producer of organic scallops in the world.

Acuapesca Group places an emphasis on environmentalism and quality. In addition to the Friend of the Sea certification, the company’s processing factory has BRC, IFS, ISO9001, andBASC certifications. The Friend of the Sea certification covers the company’s pre-processing and export operations. To pass the certification audit, the company must demonstrate, among other things, a clear identification of the origin of products and the fishing methods used in their production. Products from Acuapesca Group come with labels and printed bags that can demonstrate traceability back to the product’s origin.
