Operational since 2007, Al Marsa, fishes in the South coastal belt of country Oman, FAO Zone-51, Harbours – Ras Madrakah, Shuwaimiyah, Lakbi and Sharbatat. The company procures fish only from small artisanal traditional fishing operations using the Hand line (one hook) method which has no impact to the seabed and allows great selectivity. Paolo Bray Friend of the Sea’s Executive Director explains “Al Marsa support and work directly with the local fishing community, Friend of the Sea appreciates this.”

Oman is member of IOTC which aims to manage tuna in the India Ocean and a member of ROPME which aims to protect the water quality of the sea. Oman was also among the first in the region to sign the International Maritime Organization convention and protocols linked to MARPOL 73/78 and the UN convention on the laws of the sea and has adopted the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. To overcome over-fishing Oman has applied fishing restrictions for certain protected species of fish (e.g. shrimp, lobster and abalone) during breading seasons.
