German organic seafood specialist re-ups its credentials for preservation of the marine environment
Fontaine Nahrungsmittel GmbH, one of German’s top organic seafood companies, has been recertified for sustainable seafood production by Friend of the Sea (FOS), the preeminent certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment. The company was originally certified in 2012. With the recertification, Fontaine can continue to display the Friend of the Seaeco-label on its extensive catalog of seafood products.
“We admire Fontaine Nahrungsmittel’s commitment to organic production and their respect for sustainability,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “They should serve as an inspiration for the broader industry.”
The family-run company has remained independent since its founding in 1988. Their products include organic raising agents and certified fish products with agricultural ingredients from certified organic farming. They offer tuna, tunafor pasta, sardines, wild salmon, wild salmon soup, herring, mackerel, fishsales and shellfish. Fontaine works exclusively in the organic specialist trade in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium.They also sell through more than 30 German organic wholesalers.
In terms of sustainability, Fontaine is certified by Dolphine Safe as well as by FOS. “We use gentle fishing methods and strictly reject longline and drift netfishing,” said Hans Madel Managing Director of the company.“Our goal is to preserve marine resources for future generations.”
