Weishardt Becomes First Fish Collagen Producer to Obtain Friend of the Sea Sustainability Certification.

Weishardt  Friend of the Sea Sustainability Certification

Weishardt is one of the leading global suppliers of high-quality fish gelatin and fish collagen peptides for the food & beverage, nutrition, pharmaceutical, and beauty industries.

Friend of the Sea, the preeminent certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, is pleased to announce the certification of Weishardt for sustainable fish collagen peptides. The company can thus display the Friend of the Sea ecolabel, most notably on the brand’s renowned product, Naticol®.

Weishardt is one of the world’s leading producers of high-quality fish gelatine, fish collagen peptides. Founded in France in 1839, the company is also very famous for being the first to produce edible gelatin in 1957.

The family-owned company has successfully become a global brand praised for the quality of its products used in the food & beverage, nutrition, pharmaceutical, and beauty industries.

A pioneer in diverse fields, Weishardt decided to embrace sustainability, adopting practices respectful of the environment. Consequently, the company requested the Friend of the Sea certification for its fish collagen peptides products.

Collagen is a fundamental component of the human body, connecting the skin, tissues, muscles, and other body parts, contributing to their healthy functioning. Weishardt developed a diverse range of specific fish collagen peptides, registered under the trademark Naticol®, mainly used in functional food, supplements, nutraceuticals, and cosmetofoods.

Weishardt collagen’s raw material is sourced from byproducts of sustainably farmed and wild aquatic fish species. This way nothing is wasted, in line with the principles of a circular economy, and added value is provided to sustainable practices.

Friend of the Sea is the leading international standard for sustainable nutraceutical products from marine sources. The organization’s mission is to protect aquatic resources employing sustainable practices in all activities related to the marine environment, including, as in this case, the extraction of fish collagen peptides.

“It has been wonderful to work with Weishardt,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea. “Their embrace of sustainable practices aligns with their overall approach to scientific production and quality management. They set a great example for this industry.”

Certified Friend of the Sea producers verify their suppliers are approved and implement sustainable fishing practices. In this way, they can provide a third-party assurance to consumers worldwide.

“We are proud to be the first fish collagen manufacturer to achieve the Friend of the Sea certification,” said Pascale Robert-Jolimaître, Weishardt General Manager for Quality and R&D. “As fish collagen demand raises globally, it’s crucial to maintain healthy oceans if we want to preserve the planet for the future generations. Our customers, as well as their consumers, can now be assured that our products come from well-managed and sustainable sources.”

Weishardt was able to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable business practices according to the Friend of the Sea criteria throughout the entire certification process.
