Friend of the Sea Announces New Collaboration with Bamber & Bruce Certification Body to Carry Sustainability Audits.

Bamber & Bruce Certification

Bamber & Bruce is the oldest private analytical laboratory in Sri Lanka, assisting the regional trade industry in attaining international quality standards.

Friend of the Sea, the global certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, is pleased to announce the collaboration with Bamber & Bruce LTD certification body. Henceforth, the company is now accredited to conduct independent audits following the Friend of the Sea standards.

Under the Friend of the Sea certification scheme, sustainable seafood products are audited onsite by accredited independent bodies. This guarantees a robust and credible process that follows the best practice guidelines for standard-setting organizations as set out by the FAO.

Established in 1880, Bamber & Bruce (Pvt) Ltd is the oldest private analytical laboratory in Sri Lanka. The company has a longstanding reputation for supporting the regional trade industry to rise up to international quality standards. Bamber & Bruce occupies a leading position among the country’s service providers. Its clientele comprises some of the major exporters of Sri Lankan products.

Bamber & Bruce has been historically focused on Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Seychelles fisheries industries. Following this new collaboration with Friend of the Sea, it expects to extend its expertise to other countries. The company provides laboratory testing services, food inspections, and product certification services.

Bamber & Bruce audits fisheries for sustainable practices in handling species such as Yellowfin tuna, Big eye tuna, Swordfish, and Marlin.

Bamber & Bruce is committed to being the leading independent third party service provider in Sri Lanka,” said Gamunu Wickramasekara. “We value and respect environmental conservation and sustainability in any mean, hence proud to be a part of such an effort by Friend of the Sea certification schemes.”

Friend of the Sea certified products and services are subject to strict independent audits that verify environmental and social standards. Seafood certification is a voluntary process by which a third party guarantees that a product or service complies with specific requirements and certification standards. The procedure is based on a range of inspection activities carried out by a competent and recognized certification body.

A sustainability certification scheme stands on transparency and credibility. The collaboration with a company like Bamber & Bruce gives us more assurances about the trustworthiness of the whole process,” stated Paolo Bray, Founder and Director of Friend of the Sea.

Friend of the Sea has developed a set of standards for certification for fisheries and aquaculture products to minimize adverse effects and encourage practices respectful of the marine environment, thus preserving natural resources for the future.
