Pesquera Diamante and its Programme Fighting Against Childhood Anemia Awarded by King Felipe VI of Spain

“Pesquera Diamante” won first place in the 22nd edition of the CODESPA Awards in the “Socially Responsible Company” category.

Pesquera Diamante, a company dedicated to producing healthy marine-origin foods, received the CODESPA award from King Felipe VI of Spain in recognition of the impact of its social responsibility programme “Tambos Pesqueros Diamante,” an initiative combating anemia and child malnutrition in the Peruvian highlands.

Pesquera Diamante, has been recognized for its commitment to Sustainability through its Friend of the Sea certification since 2014. This prestigious certification signifies the company’s adherence to strict environmental and social responsibility standards in its fishing and related operations.

Beyond its core activity of fishing, Pesquera Diamante is also actively engaged in the production of fish oil and anchovies. This diversified approach not only allows the company to leverage various aspects of the marine ecosystem but also underscores its dedication to maximizing the use of marine resources in a Sustainable manner.

The Friend of the Sea certification validates Pesquera Diamante’s efforts in ensuring responsible fishing practices that prioritize the long-term health of marine ecosystems. This includes measures to mitigate bycatch, reduce carbon emissions, and promote the conservation of marine biodiversity.

Moreover, the certification extends to the company’s production processes for fish oil and anchovies, ensuring that these activities meet stringent criteria for Sustainability and environmental stewardship. This comprehensive approach underscores Pesquera Diamante’s holistic commitment to Sustainable practices across its entire value chain.

By integrating Sustainability into its core operations and achieving the Friend of the Sea certification, Pesquera Diamante demonstrates its dedication to preserving marine resources as well as setting a commendable example for the broader fishing industry. Through responsible practices and certifications like Friend of the Sea, the company strives to contribute to the conservation of marine ecosystems while meeting the growing global demand for marine-origin products.

Accepting the award on behalf of Pesquera Diamante in the Socially Responsible Company category was its Chairman of the Board, Fernando Ribaudo, who reaffirmed the Peruvian fishery’s commitment to improving child nutrition through solutions that involve and benefit the most vulnerable populations in Peru.

“Participating in such international events and receiving international recognition motivates us to continue providing the best products based on sustainable and efficient management. For Pesquera Diamante, it is an honor to receive the CODESPA award,” stated Ribaudo.

The executive highlighted that the Peruvian fishery has been receiving constant distinctions for its work with “Pesquera Diamante,” such as the Peru Award for the SDGs (PODS); ESG Award by Semana Económica; Companies that Transform Award, by RPP; and USAID, among others.

Anemia Programme

Thanks to “Pesquera Diamante” – which promotes food security through the sale of fish at social prices – by the end of 2023, more than 1,000 infants in vulnerable areas of Huánuco and Ayacucho had reversed their high rates of chronic malnutrition and anemia. Regarding this, Pesquera Diamante’s Sustainability and Communications Chief, Paola Ramírez, stated that the communities benefiting from this initiative now have over 50 trained female entrepreneurs and leaders promoting women’s empowerment and the fight against this disease.

“With the intervention of ‘Pesquera Diamante,’ more than 1 million kilograms of blue fish, such as mackerel and horse mackerel, have been sold at affordable prices in the high Andean regions of the country where blue fish was previously unavailable,” concluded Ramírez.

“We are immensely proud to count Pesquera Diamante among our oldest certified companies. Their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and social responsibility is commendable and sets a shining example for the industry. We congratulate them on this well-deserved recognition and remain dedicated to supporting their efforts towards a more sustainable future,” spoke Paolo Bray, Founder and Director of the World Sustainability Organization.
