CONAD

22 January 2018 – Italian aquaculture company PIT Produttori Ittici Trevigiani, a supplier of large-scale retail CONAD, has been found compliant with Friend of the Sea‘s sustainability requirements.

The company boasts seven trout farms covering a total of 70 hectares in the provinces of Treviso, Belluno, Pordenone and Venice in Northeast Italy. One of them, Azienda Agricola Salvador, has been audited and found in conformity with all Friend of the Sea’s sustainable aquaculture requirements.

Birds entanglement and fish escapes are prevented by means of appropriate grids, with suitable size and texture. The farmed species cannot possibly reproduce in the wild and does not represent a danger for the local population. Trout’s health is taken care of by means of appropriate density level, regular cleaning of the tanks and disease prevention policy. Moreover, fish are fed with GMO-free feed. Fish feed derives from Friend of the Sea’s approved fisheries.

Founded in the 1960’s by Bortolo Salvador, the company is currently run by Marco Fuselli and Paola Salvador.

According to Paola Salvador: “In the last decade, we embarked on a path towards respect of the environment and qualification of production. We obtained several certifications such as the IFS. Friend of the Sea certification attests our commitment to environmental sustainability and food traceability.  Retailers and our customers are requesting this type of certification more and more”.

Aquaculture is gaining a growing importance in the international seafood market” comments Paolo Bray, Founder and Director of Friend of the Sea. “It is encouraging to witness historical and well established companies like PIT innovating and growing, while respecting nature”.
