Ensis Fisheries Pvt.Ltd. of Maldives: handline yellowfin and pole and line skipjack tuna obtain FoS certification

EnsisEnsis Fisheries Pvt. Ltd. of Maldives has achieved Friend of the Sea certification for its hand line along with pole&line fishery. Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) from the certified vessels operating in Western Indian Ocean (FAO area 51) are now authorized to carry the Friend of the Sea eco-label.

Targeted tuna stock of yellowfin and skipjack is considered to be not overexploited according to the latest assessments. No protected areas, such as corals and seamounts, are affected by the fishing activity. Fishermen catch only specimen of yellowfin over 18Kg and skipjack over 1.2kg. The company is also approved Dolphin-Safe by the Earth Island Institute.

Ensis has a traceability system in place and it can demonstrate which products originate from the Friend of the Sea approved fleet. The inspected vessels are registered under Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture (MOFA).
