“L’isola d’Oro” anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus) gain Friend of the Sea certification. The anchovies are caught in the FAO 37 Northern Adriatic sea by Croatian artisanal fishing vessels using purse seines which cause no impact to the seabed.
The vessels use ‘lampara’ – a lamp that attracts the anchovies to the surface. Sonar controls help spot anchovies which swim in single species shoals, thus no other species is bycaught in the process.
“When choosing the most reliable sustainability certification program” explains Donatella Zarotti marketing director of l’Isola d’oro “we selected Friend of the Sea as it is applying the strictest criteria and its label is visible and respected in the markets we target. Anchovies fishing method is highly selective, energy efficient and it has negligible impact on the environment. Furthermore we engage at sourcing from stocks within Maximum Sustainable Yield and in compliance with minimum size and quotas”.
L’Isola d’Oro, based in Parma, has developed a successful business, deep routed in family values. It holds one of the primary positions among Italian retailer private brands and in the domestic market. The brand is available Switzerland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore and several other international markets.
