Portuguese Freitasmar’s tuna products achieve Friend of the Sea certification
Freitasmar – Portuguese company specialized in production of canned seafood – has recently achieved the Friend of the Sea certification for Skipjack and Yellowfin tuna. The company complies with all Friend of the Sea requirements and can now display the official seal of approval on its products.
All tuna species are fished by Friend of the Sea certified supplier Frabelle, a fishing company from the Philippines. The fish is caught through purse seine method in the Western Central part of the Pacific Ocean. Fish stocks are not overfished or overexploited in those areas.
The presence of a specific traceability system assures that certified products respect the certification requirements, excluding the possibility of a mix with non-certified products.
“Offering high-quality sustainable products has been our main priority for years,” explains José Maria Freitas, Freitasmar’s CEO. “Achieving the Friend of the Sea international certification is a big step forward for our company.”
