Agadir Marocco Paolo Bray – Executive Director of Friend of the Sea was among the speakers invited to the FAO RNE-INFOSAMAK Regional Seminar on “Fish Trade and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in the Near East and North Africa: Implication of Certification and Traceability Schemes for the Region”.
Bray explained how certification schemes and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) such as the Earth Island Institute have over the years contributed to fight ‘pirate’ fishing, by alerting customs and the industry about possible IUU activities, continuously monitoring seafood origin and providing valid information to national and international bodies.
The introduction of the IUU regulation has been appreciated by the certification schemes and NGOs involved in identifying sustainable origins. Friend of the Sea has strict requirements against IUU fishing incorporated in to its sustainable seafood certification.
“I was honoured to be asked to present at the FAO RNE-INFOSAMAK Regional Seminar ” explains Paolo Bray “Friend of the Sea’s international monitoring program has collected essential data on registered vessels, preventing unauthorized mixing of products and entrance to the global market of illegally fished products.”
Representatives of several African and Middle East Countries appreciated the fact that over 50% of Friend of the Sea products originate from small scale fisheries. Friend of the Sea has become a tool to promote artisanal lower impact fisheries.
