The World Sustainability Foundation (WSF) is excited to announce the launch of the “Save the Otters” campaign, an initiative dedicated to protecting otters, symbols of aquatic ecosystems and important indicators of environmental health. This initiative is part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to biodiversity conservation and preserving river and marine ecosystems.
Otters encompass 13 species varying in size (5 to 45 kg), habitat, and social behaviour. They are found almost worldwide, except in Australia, Antarctica, and the most remote islands, inhabiting both marine and river environments. These lively and cheerful aquatic acrobats typically catch their prey, such as fish, frogs, crabs, and other invertebrates, in the water. Sea otters are among the few animals that use tools, such as rocks and shells, to break open the shells of their prey.
Threats to Otters
Despite increased international protective measures, otters face numerous threats. Poaching for the online pet trade is widespread, especially in Southeast Asia. Additionally, otters are hunted for their valuable fur and often fall victim to motorboat and road vehicle accidents.
Another significant challenge is the reduction of their food sources due to river and ocean pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. These factors jeopardise the survival of otters, which rely exclusively on live prey and do not quickly adapt to new diets.
WSF’s Commitment and the Role of the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary
WSF supports the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary, a centre active in the Shetland Islands for over 30 years, dedicated to rehabilitating distressed otters and seals. Founded in 1987 by Jan Bevington, the sanctuary has become an international reference point for marine mammal protection. The centre provides veterinary care and a reintegration path into the wild, minimising human imprinting on rescued animals.
“Protecting otters means preserving the balance of aquatic ecosystems. These extraordinary mammals help regulate fish and crustacean populations and serve as reliable bioindicators of water quality and environmental health,” says Paolo Bray, founder and director of WSF.
Goals of the “Save the Otters” Campaign
The campaign focuses on three main actions:
- Raising public awareness about the crucial ecological role of otters and the urgency of their protection.
- Combating the illegal fur trade and the sale of live otters for the exotic pet market, phenomena that threaten numerous otter species.
- Supporting conservation and rehabilitation projects, with particular attention to the activities of the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary.
How to Contribute
WSF invites citizens, institutions, and companies to participate in the campaign through concrete actions actively:
- Making responsible consumption choices, favouring certified and sustainable seafood products to reduce pressure on aquatic ecosystems.
- Refusing to purchase clothing and accessories made from otter fur.
- Financially supporting organisations on the front lines of otter protection and conserving their natural habitats.
Every small gesture can make a difference in ensuring a future for these emblematic creatures of global aquatic biodiversity.
