LYSI Earns Recertification for Sustainable Fish Oil Production With New Push on Environmental Goals.

The company from Iceland has a long history as a leading international producer and exporter of fish oil.

Friend of the Sea, the global certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, is pleased to renew LYSI certification for sustainable practices in producing fish oil for Omega-3 supplements. The company, certified since 2013, can thus continue to display the Friend of the Sea label on its bulk and consumer-ready products.

Based in Reykjavik, Iceland, LYSI specializes in the production of fully refined fish oils for human consumption commercialized in bulk and products for direct sale to consumers. The company founded in 1938 has established rigorous control and quality systems that, together with research and product development, have turned it into one of the leading producers in the marine lipids sector.

In line with the efforts to adopt a more sustainable production process, LYSI first applied to the Friend of the Sea standard in 2013, effectively achieving certification. Since then, the company has continuously renewed its commitment.

Friend of the Sea is the leading international standard for sustainable fish oil, fishmeal, and Omega-3 supplements produced with wild-caught and farmed fish from FOS-approved sources. Friend of the Sea criteria for sustainable nutraceutical products includes well-managed sources of fish oil and fishmeal ingredients, traceability, and social accountability.

LYSI fish oil comes from Iceland’s vibrant fisheries. The company also relies on imported raw materials from FOS-certified suppliers in Europe, South America and North Africa.

Additionally, the company has established a policy to reduce its environmental impact systematically. For the first time, in 2021, LYSI set environmental goals based on measurements, with a special focus on further increase in the use of renewable energy and recycling of plastic generated by the operation.

As a result, 93% of the company’s energy now comes from renewable sources.

Furthermore, LYSI has set an ambitious goal to significantly increase recycling of plastic generated by the operation in the upcoming years. One big step in that direction was investing in plastic recycling company focusing on chemical free recycling processes by using geothermal heating instead.

“One of the main goals in LYSI’s environmental roadmap is to offer products from sustainable sources. Obtaining the Friend of the Sea certification perfectly harmonizes with our ambition to fully embrace sustainability”, said a company’s spokesperson.

“Iceland is one of the world’s top producers of fish oil. So we’re pleased to see that one of the country’s leading companies has set the bar high for their sustainability goals. LYSI represents a great example for this industry,” said Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea.

Friend of the Sea fish oil and Omega-3 producers verify their suppliers are listed as FOS-approved and therefore implement sustainable fishing practices. In this way, they can provide third-party assurance to consumers worldwide.
