{"id":32331,"date":"2019-10-30T15:54:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T14:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/?p=32331"},"modified":"2021-12-17T13:02:02","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T12:02:02","slug":"friend-of-the-sea-certifies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/pt-pt\/friend-of-the-sea-certifies\/","title":{"rendered":"FoS Certifies Its First Sustainable Dolphin and Whale Watching Tour Operator in New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"txtsize\"><i>Kaikoura Kayaks certified for sustainable practices that protect fur seals as well as dolphins and whales<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\"><a title=\"Friend of the Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Friend of the Sea<\/a><\/span>, the leading worldwide certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, announced today that it has certified <span style=\"color: #2828da;\"><a title=\"Kaikoura Kayaks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaikourakayaks.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kaikoura Kayaks<\/a><\/span> of New Zealand for its program for Sustainable Dolphin and Whale Watching. <b>Kaikoura Kayaks is the first such operation to be certified in New Zealand. It\u2019s also the first kayak operator ever certified by Friend of the Sea<\/b>. With this certification, Friend of the Sea is helping protect dolphins in their natural habitat while spreading valuable information about the issue of sustainability in marine wildlife.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><i>\u201cWe are truly impressed by Kaikoura Kayaks\u2019 dedication to sustainability,\u201d<\/i> said<b> Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea<\/b>. <i>\u201cWhile kayaks are generally lower in impact on wildlife than motorized boats, any human contact with marine animals can have a negative effect if it\u2019s not carefully controlled.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Kaikoura Kayaks is mostly involved in viewing New Zealand fur seal\/kekeno (<i>Arctocephalus forsteri<\/i>) and has many chance encounters with the Dusky dolphin (<i>Lagenorhynchus obscurus<\/i>). Occasionally their kayak tours spot Hector dolphins (<i>Cephalorhynchus hectori<\/i>) and humpback whales (<i>Megaptera novaeangliae<\/i>). In very rare circumstances, kayakers can see a killer whale (<i>Orcinus orca<\/i>) or the huge blue whale (<i>Balaenoptera musculus<\/i>). <i>\u201cProtecting seals is significant, \u201d<\/i> Bray added. <i>\u201cIt\u2019s not just cetaceans that are at risk today.\u201d<\/i><i><br><\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><i>\u201cThis is a real honor,\u201d<\/i> said<b> Matt Foy, Partner of Kaikoura Kayaks.<\/b> <i>\u201cWe\u2019re proud to display the Friend of the Sea emblem on our website and to be recognized for our commitment towards sustainability in our business\u201d<\/i>. The company also has certifications for sustainable tourism and safety practices. The Friend of the Sea standard seeks to minimize unintentional disturbance to the dolphins\u2019 habitat by setting a maximum number of vessels in the area at any one time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The standard also sets limits on maximum approach speed and distance between the boats and the dolphins. At the same, <b>it prohibits swimming with the animals and the use of mono-use plastics on board<\/b> the tour boats.
