The fishery in the area is not compliant with Friend of the Sea main criteria and FAO Guidelines Art 30, requesting that \u201cthe stock under consideration is not overfished\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 12pt;\">Stocks in the areas have declined from 40 to 60% over the past two years and according to ICES (2009 Advice) they \u201care being exploited unsustainably\u201d and \u201care overfished\u201d. In some areas, such as the FU16, the ICES \u201cadvice now calls for a reduction in catches to the lowest possible level\u201d. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 12pt;\">Over 70 million undersized nephrops (25% of the catch) are discarded annually in the North and South Minch fisheries alone \u00a0(2006, ICES). The fishing method \u2013 bottom trawling &#8211; is non-selective<\/span><span style=\"color: #1f497d; font-size: 12pt;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 12pt;\"> yearly discarding millions of cod, haddock, whiting, hake, monkfish and megrim. A 2002 study in the Clyde Sea reported 9kg of discards per each kg of nephrops landed. 2007 fishing trials indicate an average of 50% discards. Spurdogs, a species on the IUCN endangered species Red List, are also a noted by-catch. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0cm 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: black; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\nICES (Advice 2009) confirms that the seabed in some areas is impacted more than 7 times per year by the bottom trawlers for nephrops. Rare marine benthic species have been recorded in the trawled area including species of sea pens.
