{"id":15773,"date":"2010-06-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stagefos.com\/friend-of-the-seas-contribution-to-fight-iuu-fishing-highlighted-at-infosamak-conference-in-agadir\/"},"modified":"2021-12-17T14:26:56","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T13:26:56","slug":"friend-of-the-sea-contribution-fight-iuu-fishing-highlighted-infosamak-conference-agadir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/it\/friend-of-the-sea-contribution-fight-iuu-fishing-highlighted-infosamak-conference-agadir\/","title":{"rendered":"FoS\u2019s contribution to fight IUU fishing highlighted at Infosamak conference in Agadir"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; color: #002060; font-size: 10pt;\">Agadir Marocco Paolo Bray \u2013 Executive Director of Friend of the Sea was among the speakers invited to the FAO RNE-INFOSAMAK Regional Seminar on \u201cFish Trade and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in the Near East and North Africa: Implication of Certification and Traceability Schemes for the Region\u201d.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 115%;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; color: #002060; font-size: 10pt;\">Bray explained how certification schemes and non-governmental organizations (NGO\u2019s) such as the Earth Island Institute have over the years contributed to fight \u2018pirate\u2019 fishing, by alerting customs and the industry about possible IUU activities, continuously monitoring seafood origin and providing valid information to national and international bodies.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; color: #002060; font-size: 10pt;\">The introduction of the IUU regulation has been appreciated by the certification schemes and NGOs involved in identifying sustainable origins. \u00a0Friend of the Sea has strict requirements against IUU fishing incorporated in to its sustainable seafood certification. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; color: #002060; font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cI was honoured to be asked to present at the FAO RNE-INFOSAMAK Regional Seminar \u201d explains Paolo Bray \u201cFriend of the Sea\u2019s international monitoring program has collected essential data on registered vessels, preventing unauthorized mixing of products and entrance to the global market of illegally fished products.\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%; color: #002060; font-size: 10pt;\">Representatives of several African and Middle East Countries appreciated the fact that over 50% of Friend of the Sea products originate from small scale fisheries.
