Le lontre sono mammiferi carnivori semi-acquatici, in grado di vivere sia in acqua dolce sia salata. Si riconoscono 13 specie diverse, che variano per dimensioni e habitat: alcune vivono in acque fredde marine, altre in fiumi tropicali. Sono animali sociali, organizzati in gruppi familiari, e noti per i loro comportamenti giocosi: amano immergersi e fare gare con i cuccioli.<\/p>

Si nutrono principalmente di pesce e crostacei, ma a volte mangiano anche rane e uccelli. La pi\u00f9 grande \u00e8 la lontra gigante del Sud America: \u00e8 territoriale e sa difendersi da predatori come giaguari e alligatori. Le lontre marine trascorrono quasi tutta la vita in acqua, mentre quelle fluviali sono pi\u00f9 legate alle rive.<\/p>

Una caratteristica notevole delle lontre, in particolare delle lontre marine, \u00e8 l’uso degli strumenti: aprono molluschi con le pietre, appoggiandoli sul ventre e colpendoli con le zampe. I cuccioli imparano questo comportamento prima del primo anno di vita.<\/p>

Nella mitologia di alcune culture, le lontre sono considerate capaci di mutare forma.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Le lontre sono vittime di caccia per la pelliccia e cattura per il commercio di animali domestici, soprattutto in paesi come gli Stati Uniti. Rischiano anche per urti con imbarcazioni, incidenti stradali e malattie trasmesse da animali domestici (brucellosi, rabbia, tubercolosi) o a cui contribuisce l\u2019inquinamento. I conflitti con i pescatori sono frequenti poich\u00e9 considerano le lontre concorrenti per le risorse.<\/p>

La diminuzione delle prede \u2014 dovuta a inquinamento, pesca e distruzione dell\u2019habitat \u2014 \u00e8 un altro grave problema: le lontre dipendono dalle prede vive e non si adattano facilmente ad altre fonti di cibo.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Le lontre sono parte importante della catena alimentare: predano e allo stesso tempo sono loro stesse preda di grandi carnivori (giaguari, alligatori, serpenti, rapaci). La loro scomparsa altera l\u2019equilibrio: aumenta il numero di pesci e crostacei, diminuendo alghe e fitoplancton e riducendo la produzione di ossigeno nell\u2019acqua e nell\u2019aria.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

La World Sustainability Foundation supporta il Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong><\/a>, alle isole Shetland, da oltre 30 anni. Il centro accoglie lontre e foche malate, ferite o abbandonate, le cura e le reintroduce in natura, riducendo il contatto umano per evitare che gli esemplari non si abituino all\u2019uomo.<\/p>

Fondato nel maggio 1987 da Jan Bevington, il santuario inizi\u00f2 curando una foca prematura e anno dopo anno anche lontre abbandonate. Durante il disastro petrolifero della petroliera Braer nel 1993, ospit\u00f2 40 foche e 11 lontre, con l\u2019aiuto di centinaia di volontari.<\/p>

Il santuario \u00e8 noto a livello internazionale per l\u2019eccellente cura degli animali marini e per le attivit\u00e0 di educazione ambientale.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
