At present, there are about 600 species of corals around the world; it is estimated that\u00a0<b>20% of the world\u2019s coral reefs have been destroyed<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Another\u00a0<b>24% are at high risk of collapse<\/b>, and yet another 26% are at risk of long-term collapse due to human induced factors contributing to the declining trend of many coral species worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Factors such as aquatic resource exploitation, urbanisation, industrialisation, tourism, recreational activities and the use of unsustainable UV creams, are some of the human induced factors that are hindering the growth of coral populations and resulting in habitat degradation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Research reveals if the current trend continues,\u00a0<b>70% of the world\u2019s coral reefs could be destroyed by 2050<\/b>. The coral restoration project being undertaken by Omegor, the World Sustainability Foundation and Friend of the Sea seeks to safeguard threatened coral species through\u00a0<b>habitat protection, management and conservation measures, eco-friendly marine tourism, promotion of conscious fishing, purchase of prefabricated materials for the construction of artificial reef<\/b>\u00a0as well as the\u00a0<b>initiation of novel local and national laws,<\/b>\u00a0amongst other measures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\"><a title=\"AOW THAI MARINE ECOLOGY CENTER\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atmec.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">AOW THAI MARINE ECOLOGY CENTER<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(ATMEC) is a marine science focused initiative by Love Wildlife Foundation, aimed at providing education in marine biology and ecology to students of all ages. ATMEC also prioritizes conducting original research and conservation projects, in collaboration with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), in the Gulf of Thailand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\"><b>Thailand\u2019s Coral Reef supports 4,000 species of fish, 700 species of coral, thousands of plants and animals and are home to one in every four marine species.<\/b>\u00a0It also provides vital protection for shoreline against erosion, storm and wave damage, and is a source of food and new medicines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Coral reefs are considered to be one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on earth, serving an important role in the marine ecosystem. Corals help to regulate the global climate and maintain water quality.
