This international group of distinguished researchers in the field of cetaceans and whale watching will play a keyrole in the development and revision of dolphin and whale watching standards. The committee appointment lasts for two years.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u201c<i>We feel honored that individuals of this caliber have chosen to work with us on setting standards for sustainable dolphin and whale watching,<\/i>\u201d said\u00a0<b>Paolo Bray, Director of Friend of the Sea.<\/b>\u00a0\u201c<i>As an NGO, it\u2019s critical for us to be a part of the global research community and listen to the input that the best minds have to offer. That way, our standards reflect the most up-to-date and relevant research insights available.\u201d<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The new committee members are\u00a0<b>Mehdi Aissi<\/b>\u00a0of Tunisia,\u00a0<b>Jessica Alessi<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Cristina Fiori<\/b>\u00a0of Italy,\u00a0<b>Chiara Giulia Bertulli\u00a0<\/b>of the UK,\u00a0<b>Mariano Coscarella<\/b>\u00a0from Argentina,\u00a0<b>Putu Liza Musika<\/b>\u00a0of Indonesia,\u00a0<b>Enrico Pirotta<\/b>\u00a0of Ireland,\u00a0<b>Valeria Senigaglia<\/b>\u00a0of Australia and\u00a0<b>Ann Carole Vallejo\u00a0<\/b>of Colombia. There is one committee member from each continent. They will serve until June, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Dolphin and Whale Watching standard, one of several such\u00a0<a title=\"certified programs\" href=\"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/?page_id=11943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0001ee;\">certified programs<\/span><\/a>, establishes criteria for whale and dolphin watching programs that will not harm the animals or their habitats. For example, they set a maximum number of vessels in the dolphin watching area at any one time. They limit boats\u2019 maximum approach speed as well as the distance between the boats and the dolphins. The standard prohibits swimming with the dolphins along with mono-use plastics on board tour boats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Scientific Committee is a technical body that will engage in the development and revision of Friend of the Sea\u2019s dolphin and whale watching standards. The group sends comments and votes on the content of the standards. In addition, each member can offer inputs and suggestions on strategic decision for the development of the certification standard and comparable projects.
