{"id":570519,"date":"2026-05-27T12:02:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T10:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/?p=570519"},"modified":"2026-05-27T15:14:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T13:14:37","slug":"new-developments-fish-welfare-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/ar\/new-developments-fish-welfare-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Friend of the Sea and World Sustainability Foundation Announce New Developments in the Fish Welfare Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p align=\"justify\"><span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Fish welfare is emerging as one of the most significant issues in the global food sector, at a time when more than half of the fish consumed worldwide now comes from intensive farming.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Experts point out that factors such as stocking density, water quality, stress management, and slaughter methods can significantly impact fish health and welfare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span>The scientific debate on fish sentience<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\"><b>The scientific community<\/b>\u00a0is increasingly recognising fish as\u00a0<b>sentient beings<\/b>,\u00a0<b>capable of feeling pain and stress.<\/b>\u00a0However, assessing their welfare remains more complex than it is for land animals, making the development of new indicators and analytical methods necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Among the main concerns highlighted in the scientific literature are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Overcrowding in farming facilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">An increased risk of disease and mortality<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Stress linked to capture, transport and handling<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Wide variability in environmental parameters<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b><span>The Fish Welfare Project<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">It is in this context that the\u00a0<b><a title=\"Fish Welfare Project\" href=\"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/marine-conservation-projects-and-awareness\/fish-welfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">Fish Welfare Project<\/span><\/a><\/b>, developed by\u00a0<b>Friend of the Sea together with the World Sustainability Foundation<\/b>, takes shape. Launched in 2017, the initiative aims to\u00a0<strong>make fish welfare a measurable, verifiable, and certifiable parameter<\/strong>\u00a0and is supported by\u00a0<b>Open Philanthropy (now\u00a0<span><a title=\"Coefficient Giving\" href=\"https:\/\/coefficientgiving.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">Coefficient Giving<\/span><\/a><\/span>)<\/b>, one of the leading international philanthropic organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">The project is founded on the scientific assumption that fish are sentient beings and that their welfare represents\u00a0<b>a new frontier in the sustainability of the fisheries sector<\/b>. The aim, therefore, is to translate scientific research into operational standards applicable to both aquaculture and fisheries to reduce stress, suffering, and mortality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span>From research to practice: standards and implementation<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">The project is structured around two main lines of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<div align=\"justify\"><b>Aquaculture<\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">In collaboration with Fair Fish and Fish Etho Group,\u00a0<b>24 species-specific standards<\/b>\u00a0have been developed, with criteria for assessing and improving farm welfare and for certifying companies that adopt compliant practices.<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><b>Fisheries<\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">In collaboration with CCMAR, Fair Fish, Fish Etho Group and Demos (<a title=\"CareFish Catch project\" href=\"https:\/\/carefish.net\/catch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">CareFish Catch project<\/span><\/a>),\u00a0<b>five certification standards<\/b>\u00a0have been developed, applicable to both small-scale fisheries and large global fleets. The standards are based on the main fishing methods (nets, longlines, lines and other systems) and aim to reduce stress and injuries during capture.<\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span><b>Operational phase and impact<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">The Fish Welfare Project is now in its operational phase, with\u00a0<b>activities focused on testing standards, certifying companies and trialling improved practices.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">In recent months, the project has entered a critical validation phase,\u00a0<b>with field trials<\/b>\u00a0launched directly at aquaculture farms as well as on fishing vessels and fleets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">To date, aquaculture companies in\u00a0<b>Italy and Albania<\/b>\u00a0have joined the initiative, along with operational fleets in\u00a0<b>Ecuador and Peru<\/b>. According to estimates, the initiative could affect more than\u00a0<b>2 million tonnes of annual fish production<\/b>\u00a0across both capture fisheries and aquaculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Thanks to the continued support of Coefficient Giving, activities over the next three years will focus on:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Expanding field trials<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Certifying aquaculture farms and fishing operations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Testing new equipment and materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Analysing fish welfare data<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Continuous improvement of the standards<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">Raising consumer awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">The ultimate goal is to make\u00a0<b>fish welfare a recognised international standard<\/b>, integrated into sustainability certification systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\"><b>A paradigm shift that could redefine the sustainability criteria of the entire sector in the years ahead.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>About Friend of the Sea and the World Sustainability Foundation<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\"><a title=\"Friend of the Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/friendofthesea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">Friend of the Sea<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a project of the\u00a0<a title=\"World Sustainability Organization\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsogroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">World Sustainability Organization<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(WSO), dedicated to the certification of products and services that respect marine habitats and aquatic species. Seafood products and Omega-3 supplements from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture can be certified if they pass compliance audits against strict sustainability requirements. Audits are carried out by qualified auditors from independent certification bodies accredited at national level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica;\">In 2022, to make its certification campaigns more effective, WSO launched its non-profit branch, the\u00a0<a title=\"World Sustainability Foundation\" href=\"https:\/\/worldsustainabilityfoundation.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #2828da;\">World Sustainability Foundation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(WSF). The Foundation\u2019s commitments include safeguarding natural resources and habitats, and protecting threatened species.
